Even before the current coronavirus pandemic, most human resources (HR) professionals were unprepared to thrive in the future. Now that the crisis has hit, more is demanded from HR than at any other time in history.

The free research report, The Future of the HR Function 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand how ready their departments are to adapt to a fast-changing present and uncertain future.

The study reports that only 37% of HR professionals are confident in HR’s preparedness to thrive over the next two years. Fully two-third of study participants say the number one priority for HR over the next two years is to "create workforces that are agile and can respond quickly to change."

Results also indicate the top areas of focus that HR professionals need to give attention to as they manage their workforces over the next two years. The most common are the need to:
    ● create workforces that are agile and can respond quickly to change,
    ● enhance the employee experience,
    ● leverage HR analytics to improve decision-making and insights, and
    ● ramp up reskilling and upskilling of employees.

“With the uncertainty in the world right now, preparation is key for businesses to thrive.  HR will require agility and versatility to ensure policies and processes are in place to keep employees healthy and stress levels low,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Download the full report which includes details on seven key takeaways to help HR departments gain insights into the pivotal responsibilities and roles they have to play in the future of managing their workforce.

Only 23% of human resources (HR) professionals view their own company’s diversity and inclusion (D&I) practices in the “advanced” or “vanguard” stages of D&I maturity.  Further, of those with direct responsibility for D&I, only 16% say more than half of their role is allocated to that function.

The free research report, State of Diversity & Inclusion 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the state of the D&I landscape, program maturity levels, and why so many organizations struggle with D&I initiatives.

The study also shows that not enough organizations are incorporating key D&I initiatives across the rest of the talent management function. Few say D&I initiatives touch talent acquisition (23%), talent development (21%), learning and development (19%), or succession planning (17%) to a high or very high degree.

The most commonly cited barrier to D&I effectiveness is a “lack of metrics to identify insufficient diversity” (34%), followed by a failure to prioritize at top leadership levels (31%) and lack of budget (28%).

Examining the processes that are working well and organizations that perform better in the area of D&I practices, results reveal that these companies:
    ● understand the benefits of diversity and have support from the top
    ● have D&I definitions that are more inclusive
    ● integrate D&I frameworks into their business strategies
    ● emphasize D&I in succession planning and talent acquisition processes
    ● consistently communicate the importance of D&I throughout the organization
    ● use more advanced metrics and set goals
    ● provide training for inclusion awareness and policies
    ● have programs to improve diversity in the leadership ranks
    ● offer more family-friendly benefits

“In today’s times, leadership has to wake up to realize that diversity and inclusion initiatives are largely lacking in organizations,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “D&I in the corporate culture has to be filtered from the top down, and that includes adjusting budgets to account for that commitment.”

Download the full report which includes details on twelve key takeaways to help HR departments gain insights into how to achieve greater success and engagement through better D&I practices.

Women remain under-represented in business leadership positions, and most organizations are not doing all they can to remedy the situation. The majority of HR professionals (68%) say their company does not hold senior leaders personally accountable for increasing the number of women in leadership positions. In addition, most companies (77%) are not incentivizing managers to promote more women into leadership roles.

The free research report, The State of Women in Leadership 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the state of leadership gender diversity initiatives and the degree to which organizations are employing women in leadership positions.

The research insights point to a lack of tracking, evaluation, and sharing of data about women in leadership and high potential employee pools. Takeaways from the report point to the fact that companies could improve in these areas with support from the top executive by developing better strategies for setting key objectives, measuring leadership diversity data, conducting regular audits, and producing consistent reporting.

“Amid the coronavirus pandemic, many women are in the media in powerful and visible roles demonstrating high levels of competency around the world,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “Yet many companies are still not giving high priority to the importance of diversity in the leadership ranks.”

Performance of employee learning programs is not where it could be, especially in this time of remote work and increased technology for communications and work processes.  Among HR departments that use at least one learning technology, only about two-fifths (39%) say they are satisfied with their learning technologies.

The free research report, The State of Learner Experience, Engagement, and Solutions 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the state of the learning culture in the workplace and learning technologies and the effect on engagement.

Learning technology is fairly widespread as most companies (83%) use at least one learning technology for the purposes of providing learning to their employees.  Only one-quarter of HR professionals agree that their learning technologies are well integrated with one another. Also, about the same small proportion say their learning platform is integrated with their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Regardless of this dissatisfaction and lack of integration, a majority believe that the learners are experiencing positive outcomes (69%).  However few report they have good metrics and analytics in the learner experience (13%), engagement (10%), and success (14%) that can verify such outcomes.

“With the pandemic testing businesses like never before, companies need to ensure that employees can stay informed and learn on the fly more than ever,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “Organizations will need to get it right with building a better learning culture if they want to survive and thrive in our demanding times.”

At a time when many employees and employers are under financial stress, some organizations are assisting them via various types of voluntary benefits, as suggested by new research from HR.com.  Voluntary benefits can potentially also help improve the overall employee experience and address the problematic issue of work/life balance.

The free research report, Voluntary Benefits in Today’s Workplace, is now available for download. HR.com’s HR Research Institute partnered with InfoArmor, the market leader in employee identity protection, to conduct the survey of HR professionals from a broad cross-section of organizations.

It’s understandable amid today’s uncertain work environment, that voluntary benefits could help improve employees’ sense of security related to job, health, and finances, highlighting the importance right now of offerings like critical-illness insurance, financial counseling, and long-term care.  The research reveals that the most common types of benefits offered include insurance plans for: life (83%), dental (77%), vision (76%), disability (75%), accident (58%), critical illness (51%), financial counseling (48%), and identity protection (39%).

More detailed investigation highlights the fact that organizations that view voluntary benefits as very important are about twice as likely to see employee engagement as a strategic value. Also employers are more likely to attract and retain employees and let their workforce benefit from a work/life balance if they recognize the importance of voluntary benefits programs.

“Especially in this time of crisis, it’s vital for employers to know where they stand with their compensation programs, including benefits.  As employees are looking for security in their jobs and with their finances, companies will need to assess and evaluate their current benefits programs and reshape offerings to attract and retain talent,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Download the full report and/or infographic which include additional strategic insights and key takeaways to help HR professionals and employers plan for the optimal benefits offerings that are essential to attracting and retaining the best talent.

The contingent workforce is extensive, with the vast majority (91%) of organizations using some type of temporary or contingent workers for some portion of their workforce.  Amid continued economic and political uncertainty, companies may turn even more to a gig workforce as an agile and reactive approach to staffing and leveraging skills becomes more common.

The free research report, The State of the Free Agent Nation and Contingent Workforce 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand how organizations acquire and manage the contingent workforce.

This gig economy is here to stay as half of HR professionals expect their proportion of contingent workers to grow (50%) or stay the same (40%) over the next three years.  Further results from the study indicate that organizations that are good or excellent at acquiring and managing contingent workers are also more likely than others to maintain a nimble and versatile business model and to involve HR to a higher degree in the hiring of contingent workers.

“At times of change and uncertainty like this, organizations often turn to contingent work arrangements,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “HR will need to step up to ensure strategies are in place to meet the demand for skills as they manage a nimble and agile workforce.”

Only 37% of human resource (HR) professionals reveal that their organizations have a well-known and intentionally cultivated employer brand, and those without a strong brand could be harming business without realizing it. In this time of global crisis, it may be concerning to hear that more than one in four HR professionals actually believe their organization’s efforts to reflect social responsibility in their employer brand are dismal or below average.

The free research report, The State of Employer Branding and Recruitment Advertising 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the state of employer brand today in business and how to build a compelling brand to help attract and retain the best possible talent.

The study defines employer brand as the brand that an organization communicates as its identity to current and, especially, potential employees.  Recruitment advertising is the process by which organizations market and advertise job openings.

HR departments may have their work cut out for them as 30% believe that the HR team as a whole has responsibility for the employer brand, while 28% say the marketing team as a whole does. But the most widely selected way of managing the employer brand is through a joint team made up of both HR and marketing professionals, who benefit by joining their areas of expertise.

“We’re realizing now that organizations must take particular care to safeguard their brands in stressful and unpredictable times. After all, serious missteps with this may long be remembered after a period of crisis,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “So, it is worrisome that even before the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies were struggling to cultivate an excellent employer brand.”

New Global Study by the HR Research Institute Reveals Appreciation, Recognition, and Honesty Foster Teamwork and Connection

In today’s uncertain times, it has never been more important for employees to feel a sense of security in the organizations they devote their time and energy to work for. A recent survey of 1,000 employees across industries in five countries showed a large majority of people (82%) feel some sense of belonging in their workplace, but only 45% of employees strongly agree that they feel they belong at their organization.

The top three factors that make people feel they belong at the organization where they work are: being recognized for accomplishments (61%), feeling contributions are valued (59%), and having opportunities to express honest opinions (40%.) The top three barriers to achieving a sense of belonging and connectedness in the workplace are lack of appreciation or recognition (45%), heavy workload (45%), and inadequate leadership (37%).

The free research report, Creating a Sense of Belonging in the Workplace, is now available for download. HR.com’s HR Research Institute partnered with Ultimate Software, a leading human capital management solutions provider, to conduct the cross-cultural survey of workers at organizations with more than 200 employees in Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Despite identifying these factors, less than half of workers (49%) feel their organizations are supportive and just more than one in three (37%) can get answers quickly to questions or concerns about work/working for the organization. Results also reveal that one in three (32%) workers strongly agree the company conducts regular satisfaction surveys and even fewer (24%) that their employer follows through with effective action plans to surveys.

More detailed investigation highlights the fact that only about a quarter of people (26%) strongly agree that their organization's communication programs and techniques are effective.  This lack of basic listening infrastructure and communication capabilities highlight weaknesses that need to improve, particularly in an expanding era of remote work.
Further results show that the next most cited factor that gets in the way of a sense of belonging at work is too few opportunities to meet face to face, with one in three (31%) citing this as a barrier to feeling connected at work.  The exact same proportion agrees they feel lonely at work.

“If employers want to create a greater sense of belonging, they will need to address these issues as well as the fact that nearly half of employees are suffering from burn-out,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Especially in light of current events, leadership should ensure everyone knows their roles in communicating and supporting each other to stave off feelings of isolation and disengagement, as well as understand the relative value of diverse communications offerings to literally connect people in this digital day and age.”
