Employee background screening has grown even more common over the last several years, and such screening applies to a broader range of workers than ever before. Today, 90% of employers screen all full-time employees, up from 86% in 2019 and 83% in 2017. What's more, employers have also become more likely to screen part-time employees and contingent employees as well as volunteer workers.

The free research report, Background Screening: Trends and Uses in Today’s Global Economy, is now available for download.  HR.com's HR Research Institute partnered with the Professional Background Screening Association (PBSA) to conduct the study of HR professionals in order to understand current employee background screening usage and trends as well as what features and applications are key to ensuring organizations are safeguarding their workforce.

Study results also revealed the top three reasons for conducting background checks are:
    ● protecting the safety of employees and customers (83%),
    ● improving the quality of hires (51%), and
    ● mandated by law/regulations (40%).

Along with the recent growth of screening, it appears that background checks are becoming more robust. Employers are checking significantly more individuals and also including more elements of non-criminal record checks. These checks can include employment verification, social media searches, credit reports and professional license verification.

“It’s reassuring to see that more companies are investing in safeguarding their business,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Though many organizations conduct these employment background checks, the length of time to get the results is the top challenge, an issue exacerbated by the redaction of personal identifiers in some federal, state and local court records, and the lack of electronic access to some court systems across the country.”

Download the full report and infographic which include details for HR departments to gain insights into where and how to grow and improve their background screening for the safety of their business.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, many employers are adapting their performance management (PM) priorities and processes. Although such changes are important, they also make it even more challenging to improve today's under-performing PM systems.

The free research report, The State of Performance Management 2020, is now available for download.  For the third consecutive year, HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the effectiveness of current performance management systems and where they need improvement now and in the near future.

This year, just over one-third of HR professionals (37%) say their PM process meets organizational performance management goals to a high or very high degree, slightly higher than the proportion in 2019 but still the minority. What's more, a third believe their leaders still view PM as a waste of time or a "necessary evil." Only 23% say leaders view PM as crucial for overall business performance, though another 17% say they see it as an aid to employee development.

Further examination reveals that many managers lack necessary performance skills, as a mere 28% say their managers are skilled at PM. This could be partially due to lack of training, with just two-fifths saying most of their organization’s managers have received sufficient training in PM.

“Focus on performance management training for managers is key in these times of unpredictability,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “Communication, goal-setting, and ongoing feedback are critical. Employers must ensure individuals are performing and productive and, as a result, business is surviving and thriving.”

The good news is that many organizations have been improving their PM processes and systems in recent years, are planning for even more improvements in the near future, and have quickly adapted to the current health crisis with increased remote communication and discussions about employee health and well-being.

Download the full report which includes details on nine key takeaways to help HR departments gain insights into how to improve and succeed in the areas of performance management to then meet business objectives, especially in the challenging times of a pandemic.

Like so many organizations, Pulse Solutions struggled with employee performance appraisals and communications, challenges that have become even more daunting during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now available for download, the case study, Creating a Performance Management System that Works, highlights how AssessTEAM helped Pulse Solutions overcome its challenges before and during the pandemic by leveraging the right performance management platform to maximize employee effectiveness and productivity with their remote workforce.

Although the majority of organizations have performance management processes, according to recent research conducted by HR.com’s HR Research Institute, few appear to be generating effective results. AssessTEAM was able to examine this research and apply insightful data-based decisions in developing next steps and performance management strategies for Pulse Solutions.

“In these uncertain times, where managers across the world are grappling with team collaboration and communication related challenges, it becomes crucial for organizations to monitor their employee performance and employee engagement levels. AssessTEAM offers a cost-effective cloud based performance management solution for businesses worldwide to assess, analyze, and improve their team performance," said Rajat Mathur, AssessTEAM Sales Director (USA).
“All organizations have unique performance management challenges, but they can learn a lot from one another in terms of approaches,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Technologies are never a panacea in themselves, but finding and applying the right technologies can go a long way toward improving underachieving performance management systems.”

The technology alone did not solve all issues for Pulse Solutions’ performance management problems, but the application did provide an excellent vehicle to improve the performance management changes their executive was looking for.  Their now more systematic approach to performance management has given them more timely and less confrontational conversations, clarity about goals and job responsibilities, and optimal employee effectiveness, the key to staying in business.

HR.com, the largest network of human resource (HR) executives, has partnered with National Wellness Institute (NWI) to design, build, and launch a first-of-its-kind training to bring a heightened level of multicultural competency to the HR community, wellness professionals, and beyond. The certificate course titled “High-Level Wellness Through Multicultural Competency: Cultivating a Culture of Wellness for All” will be kicking off August 10th.

The term multicultural competency is at the forefront of the minds of every business, community, and wellness leader. Participants will gain tools and skills to lead the change through effective and meaningful ways of engaging individuals whose worldviews are different from their own, while championing high-level wellness for everyone.

Recent racial injustice uprisings have left wellness professionals and HR professionals with challenging questions and needs from their organizations to advance cultural inclusion and introspection to become more informed.

HR.com’s Head of People, Gavin Morton, who has been part of the pilot program expressed, “The timing of the multicultural competency training in this certificate course could not be better. The politically and racially charged environment plus the stress of a pandemic has greatly impacted all society regardless of demographic. Providing wellness professionals with the tools and techniques to understand how to support their employees and clients is critical. Companies need to be focused on the wellness of their employees, and they need to understand how the wellness dimensions impact people across all demographic groups.”

The certificate course will be a highly engaging, self-paced course designed by multicultural competency subject matter experts that incorporates National Wellness Institute’s world-renowned Six Dimensions of Wellness and Multicultural Wellness Wheel, as well as meets the rigorous standards of the evidence-based Wellness Promotion Competency Model. The course is showing high demand, with the current pilot program having been sold out.

Chief Learning Officer at HR.com, Heidi Scott, who had an active role in creating the course reflected, “Partnering with National Wellness Institute to design and build this course has been rich in value for many reasons. The team of subject matter experts they brought to the table provided extreme content depth and accuracy. NWI provided guidance on how best to position learning activities to hit the needs people in every industry face when it comes to multicultural competency. HR.com's Learning and Development Team brought insightful, creativity to the initiative - all in an effort to arrive at enjoyable, online learning that ‘sticks.’ The active engagement provided to all participants in the online learning environment equips them to go DO their jobs better. And that is truly exciting as we seek to positively impact our workplaces and world through better understanding, respecting and valuing all people.”

Course participants will be able to take advantage of special pricing, as well as earn HRCI General Recertification Credits or SHRM PDCs. Group registrations are available, but space is limited. Participants will also receive a ‘High-Level Wellness Through Multicultural Competency’ Certificate. This course also qualifies for Continuing Education Credits through National Wellness Institute for ACSM, NBHWC, NCHEC, or NWI CWP.

Despite the economic setback and higher unemployment rates associated with the coronavirus crisis, talent acquisition (TA) remains a high priority for most organizations. Recent human resources (HR) research found that most HR professionals (81%) say their organization considers hiring the best talent to still be among their top ten priorities. Fewer, however, say hiring great talent is their single top priority (17%) or among their top three priorities (26%).

The free research report, The Future of Talent Acquisition 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to get a snapshot of what the TA function looks like now and what it will look like in the future as far as hiring goals and critical technology.

Study results also found that few participants work for organizations that excel in the art of recruitment.  In fact, HR.com's research revealed that less than a third of organizations (just 29%) say their TA function is either "advanced" or "top-notch" as defined by the study. Moreover, the current crisis is making it more difficult to achieve excellence in this area. When respondents were asked about the biggest barriers to TA success today, they were most likely to cite a lack of certainty about the future.

“Now more than ever, it’s essential that employers make their recruitment planning a priority to prepare for future uncertainty with agility and anticipation,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “It’s time to ensure strategic recruitment goals are in place based on the skills gaps and potential changes.”

HR.com, the largest network of human resource (HR) executives, teamed up with HRCI® to host the ultimate HR virtual event - Inspire 2020. The event attracted over 55,000 registrations and provided participants five days of relevant, timely HR content from a powerhouse lineup of speakers.

Inspire filled the gap this season left by canceled events, postponed conferences, travel restrictions, and public safety concerns due to the COVID-19 public health epidemic. The entire event could be accessed from the convenience of home to stay safe and save on travel costs.

The Inspire 2020 team nearly doubled their registration goal and broke the record for the largest virtual HR conference. Attendees tuned in from over 90 different countries to participate, engaging with educational content and networking opportunities with exhibitors and sponsors, learning best practices and the latest HR insights. Over one third of attendees were manager level and above.

HR.com opened up credit access, allowing attendees to earn unlimited HRCI credits or SHRM PDCs to reach their professional certification goals. In the week following the conference, the event archives saw over 5,000 views, which allowed more professionals to obtain CU credits for HRCI and SHRM certification. Recorded webcast sessions are archived and available for viewing and credit-earning opportunities here:   https://web.hr.com/096l

Each day of the virtual event brought new discussions and guidance on how to evolve as a workforce both during and after the effects of COVID-19. A few of the sessions that focused on these concerns included:
    • The 3 Post-COVID “Rs”: Rehire, Rebuild Trust, and Reinvent the Employee Experience
    • Executive Compensation and Leadership in a Pandemic
    • Thriving in a New Normal: 4 Steps HR Leaders Can Take to Support Employees During Re-entry to Work
    • Recruitment Advertising after COVID-19: How To Hire In The New Job Market
The global uproar of protests against racial injustices has been a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity and inclusivity, especially in the workplace. Understanding how to combat personal implicit biases to make a more positive, inclusive work space for others is one of the many D&I topics discussed during Inspire. The sessions that addressed these challenges included:
    • Let’s Dance: Developing Inclusive Training Content with Diversity & Accessibility in Mind
    • It's On Us: How Leader Intervention Drives Inclusion and Prevents Inequity and Hostility
    • Re-Engaging Your Global Workforce
    • How to Decode Workplace Culture and Use As An Early Warning System
“Inspiration is the first step in sparking a movement for change. This ties into our goal for the participants of Inspire 2020: provide timely resources and information for HR professionals to apply to their own careers and, as a result, create impactful, positive change,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “We were thrilled to be able to fill the HR conference void this season and equip our HR community.”

The event also brought in charitable donations for Feeding America and The Institute for Human Resources to help those affected by COVID-19.

Attendees reflected on their experience at Inspire 2020:
“I loved the positivity. We have been bombarded lately with so much difficult news and everyone has been fearful, scared, and on edge. I needed my positive bucket filled and a reminder to help fill others (which will help me too).”

“Great presentation; it motivated me as an HR professional to remember why I am an HR professional and what my mission is.”

“This was an excellent experience and I came away from this presentation with many ideas and "take-aways" that can be used immediately.”

Steve Gilliland, a top-rated keynote speaker, and member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, emulated, “Only one word can describe my virtual experience on Monday…Awesome! It was an honor and privilege to meet so many people who make HR.com so extraordinary.”

In the age of the Covid-19 pandemic, employee coaching and mentoring are not being put on the back burner. Instead, they are quickly adapting by relying on videoconferencing and other virtual technologies.

This adaptation has happened so quickly that HR professionals still see coaching as important (57%) and half still view mentoring as important.  In fact, most (72%) report that their organizations will make use of virtual coaching and mentoring as a reaction to the pandemic.

The free research report, The State of Coaching & Mentoring 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to better understand the state of coaching and mentoring in today’s organizations.

Although coaching and mentoring are widely viewed as important, most organizations are still not using them as effectively as they could. In fact, only 28% of HR professionals believe that more than half of their coaches are highly effective, and just 33% think half or more of their mentors are effective.

“The struggles with coaching and mentoring are not specifically linked to a greater usage of remote technologies,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “Rather, there are long standing challenges with employee coaching and mentoring.  They are widely seen as key developmental strategies, but few organizations have mastered them. In fact, our new report takes an indepth look at the major challenges facing both coaching and mentoring.”

Further examination highlights the fact that coaching and mentoring are seen as having a positive impact on both individual development and organizational performance. However, one key challenge is that many leaders lack skills in these areas.  The research did highlight some concerns about workforce coaching with the fact that about half (51%) of organizations with coaches do not provide formal training in coaching skills.  Only 29% provide formal training for select groups and just 20% provide formal training for everyone who does coaching.

Investment in coaching and mentoring programs will pay off as employers leverage virtual and remote technologies to provide a safe platform for trainers to reach employees anywhere in the world at lower cost and safer distances.

Although HR professionals tend to be highly educated, with 41% holding a master's degree or higher, their professed areas of expertise do not often align well with today's crisis. Whereas a majority consider themselves experts in the area of "employment, recruitment and placement," relatively few say they have expertise in risk management or health and safety, two critical areas of competence that employers will need on their team during the current pandemic.

The free research report, The State of HR Skills and Education in 2020, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute conducted the study of HR professionals to take an in-depth look at the state of HR professionals’ education and skills and how they are able keep them up to date.

Further examination highlights the details of where HR professionals today are lacking in specific skills. Only 21% have expertise in risk assessment and just 23% consider themselves expert in both employee wellness and health and safety.

Data analysis also indicates there are often large gaps between the perceived importance of a skill and the HR professional’s actual competence in that area. HR skills that will need much further improvement in the near future include:
    ● leveraging and accommodating a range of diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds,
    ● understanding and using HR data,
    ● demonstrating HR expertise, and
    ● making business decisions and recommendations.

“We are learning on the fly in this pandemic and discovering essential skills and abilities that are needed by HR departments and leadership,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.  “HR professionals can now reevaluate their individual professional needs and skills gaps to ready their workforce for the future. This includes not only adjusting to new economic and wellness realities but improving in areas such as diversity, inclusion, and equity.”
